Non-Profit Friends of Golf (FOG) Teams with G/FORE To Donate 2,000 New Golf Shoes to CIF High School Golf Students
 
CIF City Section Students to Get New Shoes at Event This Saturday (Oct 21) at Birmingham Community Charter HS in Lake Balboa
 

  • Event Description:  Friends of Golf (FOG) has teamed with G/FORE to donate 2,000 pairs of brand-new golf shoes to CIF high school student athletes starting this Saturday at Birmingham Community Charter High School in Lake Balboa. CIF City Section high school coaches and members of their golf teams will be picking up the donated golf shoes and be on hand, as well as representatives from FOG and CIF. 

 
Note: High school golf students from two additional CIF Southern California divisions (CIF Southern Section and CIF San Diego Section) will also receive free shoes at future events.

CIF CITY SECTION:
The California Interscholastic Federation (hereinafter referred to as the CIF) was founded in Los Angeles in 1914 in order to standardize rules and team structures between schools. As a problem-solving organization, the CIF prides itself on providing equitable athletic competition for more than 1,600 schools across California. The CIF Los Angeles City Section (hereinafter referred to as LACS) constitutes a Section of the CIF, and as such, conducts its athletic programs in conformance with the general policies of the State. Currently, there are 51 golf programs within CIF City Section.

Los Angeles, CA (July 31, 2023) Friends of Golf (FOG) will honor former PGA of America President Tom Addis III with The Ken Venturi “Spirit of Giving” Award at its 43rd annual charity golf tournament presented by Konica Minolta on October 16th at Bel-Air Country Club, it was announced today by FOG President Peter Best.
 
Emmy Award-winning sportscaster Jim Nantz will be on-hand once again to present awards and interview this year’s honorees at the tournament, which will also honor PGA Tour standout and Southern California native Max Homa and LPGA star and World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Juli Inkster. Homa, a six-time winner on the PGA Tour and former player on the SoCal PGA Jr. Tour, who is currently ranked in the top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings, and Inkster, who has 31 career LPGA victories, will both be presented with the FOG Honoree Trophy at the tournament.
 
Addis, who served as President of the PGA of America in 1995 and 1996 and is currently the Executive Director Emeritus of the Southern California Section of the PGA of America, will receive The Ken Venturi “Spirit of Giving” Award at the tournament. Considered one of the PGA’s most dedicated and active members, Addis has devoted his career to the game and business of golf and helped establish golf as a recognized sport in the Special Olympics Games.
 
“Tom Addis is the ideal recipient for this year’s Ken Venturi ‘Spirit of Giving’ Award, as he has dedicated his life, both personally and professionally, to growing the game of golf and establishing access to the sport for people from all walks of life,” says FOG’s Best. “He joins our other tremendous honorees, Max Homa and Juli Inkster, for what should be a truly special event this year. And we are thrilled that the best in the business, Jim Nantz, is joining us once again to help us present the awards and interview our honorees at the post-tournament banquet.”
 
“I have respected and appreciated the work FOG has done for our youth and our school students through my years with the Southern California PGA,” said Addis. “Having grown up in golf and watched and enjoyed Mr. Venturi and his skills, dedication, and fortitude on the golf course, I am extremely proud, humbled, and honored to receive the ‘Spirit of Giving Award’ and I am so happy to have the opportunity to emulate the spirit and carry that banner in the future.”
 
In 2012, FOG created the inaugural Ken Venturi “Spirit of Giving” Award to honor Venturi and his commitment to being an inspiring and motivating force for young golfers everywhere. Venturi, who passed away in 2013, was a Friend of FOG for many years, almost since its inception. Through the years, he graciously committed his time to support the mission of FOG and conducted numerous clinics for players and helped attract many top professional golfers to contribute their time to the organization’s various initiatives.
 
Addis joins an illustrious group of past recipients of the “Spirit of Giving” Award, including Al Michaels (2022), Vin Scully (2020), Tom Debrowski & Joseph Sindelar, Jr. (2019) and Ely Callaway & Oliver “Chip” Brewer (2015).
 
Homa and Inkster will be joining a stellar group of past FOG honorees at this year’s event, a list that includes Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Annika Sörenstam, Dustin Johnson, Lorena Ochoa, Patrick Cantlay, Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa, who was honored in 2022.

Homa stated, “As someone who grew up here in Southern California hearing about Eddie Merrins and all that he has done for the game through Friends of Golf, receiving The Eddie Merrins Award is quite the honor and I am thrilled to be sharing that honor with Juli Inkster this year.”

Homa has six PGA Tour victories, including the 2023 Fortinet Championship and Farmers Insurance Open. He won the Fortinet Championship and Wells Fargo Championship in 2022, The Genesis Invitational in 2021 and Homa got his first PGA Tour victory in 2019 at the Wells Fargo Championship. Homa, who was born in Burbank, CA., is a graduate of Valencia High School and the University of California, Berkeley, won the individual 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Championship.
 
Inkster ranks second in wins among all active players on the LPGA Tour and has over $14 million in career earnings. Inkster is also the only golfer in LPGA Tour history to win two major tournaments in a decade for three consecutive decades by winning three in the 1980s, two in the 1990s, and two more in the 2000s. Inkster has seven total LPGA major tournament victories, including two Nabisco Dinah Shore wins (1984/1989), the 1984 du Maurier Classic, two LPGA Championships (1999/2000) and a pair of U.S. Women’s Open trophies (1999/2002).
 
Born and raised in Santa Cruz, California, Inkster played her college golf at San Jose State, where she was an All-American in 1979, 1981 and 1982. From 1980 to 1982, Inkster won three consecutive U.S. Women’s Amateur tournaments, becoming the first woman since 1934 to win three consecutive U.S. Amateur titles. She also has more wins in Solheim Cup matches than any other American and was inducted into LPGA Hall of Fame in 1999 and the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000.
