SCGA Junior — 2020 Friends of Golf Scholar : Shani Waite

Shani Waite: After 10+ years as an active participant in SCGA Junior programs, Shani is now fulfilling her dream of becoming a college golfer. She’ll be attending Prairie View A&M University this fall where she’ll compete on the Division I women’s golf team while pursuing a degree in psychology.

“SCGA Junior has helped me become a more independent and confident person. I started in this program when I was eight years old and was a very shy little girl who did not know how to get out of her comfort zone. The SCGA Play Day outings helped me see that there is so much one can do with the game of golf. During these outings they pair each junior with an SCGA member. These members can eventually become some of your mentors based on the tight bonds and relationships you build with them. There are still members that I talk to today even if it is just for catching up! At the end of the outings, the SCGA Junior staff calls each junior up to the front to say what they learned about their mentor and the course. I used to be scared when I did these, but later I realized that those mini speeches that I gave eventually helped me overcome public speaking. I am not afraid to talk to a wide range of people whether it is for school or golf events. I was humbly honored to be selected to represent The First Tee of Los Angeles in the Champions Tour’s Pure Insurance Championship in September 2019 at Pebble Beach, paired with Olin Browne. During this event, I spoke to PGA Championship Players, was interviewed on the Golf Channel, interviewed with Olin Browne on a nationally syndicated radio broadcast, and interviewed for two golf magazines. With the help of the SCGA Junior, all of those events where I had to publicly speak, made those moments easier and more comfortable. When I was 12-14 years old, I was selected by SCGA Junior to lead a clinic with PGA Professionals Luke Donald and Butch Harmon during two F.O.G. events at the Bel Air Country Club. During the event, I hit shots in front of the members and I was even given the opportunity to interview Phil Mickelson! Even then, I could already tell what a change they made in me. I was more outgoing, willing to start conversations, and fearless.” -excerpt from Shani Waite’s scholarship essay

Pepperdine’s Theegala Named 2020 Ben Hogan Award Winner

FORT WORTH, Texas (June 9, 2020) – The Hogan Trophy Award Foundation and Friends of Golf (FOG) made a joint presentation Tuesday night announcing that Pepperdine senior Sahith Theegala has been named the winner of the 2020 Ben Hogan Award presented by Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. (Konica Minolta).

Theegala is the inaugural winner from Pepperdine and the first winner from a non-Power 5 Conference school since Ryan Moore of UNLV in 2005.

Theegala finished the season as the top-ranked college player in both the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and the Golfstat individual rankings. He also sits among the world’s top five in both the World Amateur Golf Ranking (No. 3) and Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking (No. 5). The Ben Hogan Award’s January Golfer of the Month picked up a four-shot win at the 2020 Australian Master of the Amateurs.

The native of Chino Hills, Calif., was the 2019 Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) champion and advanced to the match play portion of both the U.S. Amateur and Western Amateur last summer. In addition, he was the runner up at the 2019 Sahalee Players Amateur and took 12th at the Sunnehanna Amateur.

Theegala was named First-Team America by PING and Golfweek in the 2019-20 season. In college play, he won a pair of tournaments, the Southwest Invitational and the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. He had four additional top-10 finishes and was among the top 20 in all eight events. The senior posted a 69.04 scoring average over 24 rounds.

The Ben Hogan Award is given annually to the top men’s college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions over the past 12 months. The selection committee is made up of more than two dozen leaders and experts in college, amateur and professional golf. In addition, all past Hogan Award winners are eligible to vote in the final round. In order to determine the winner, each ballot cast ranked the group of three finalists, which included Theegala, Vanderbilt senior John Augenstein and Florida freshman Ricky Castillo.

The Ben Hogan Trophy was first issued by FOG in 1990 at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles and also included academic achievement in its original list of standards. In 2002, the Ben Hogan Award moved to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, Hogan’s hometown and the site of five of his PGA TOUR victories. At that time, it revised its criteria to its current standard of honoring the outstanding amateur and collegiate golfer.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the announcement was made virtually Tuesday night during a Ben Hogan Award Presentation Special instead of during its customary black-tie dinner at Colonial Country Club. As part of the presentation, Eddie Merrins and Sal Cimbolo of FOG presented the bronze Hogan trophy and Hogan crystal to Theegala at his house in California. In addition, Theegala also was extended the first invitation into the PGA TOUR’s 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge from tournament chairman Rob Hood of Colonial Country Club.

Since 2002, the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation has awarded more than $825,000 in scholarships to more than two dozen schools. This year, $30,000 in grants are being distributed, with $15,000 going to the winner’s university and $7,500 to the two finalists’ schools.

Past winners of the Ben Hogan Award include three golfers currently ranked in the top 30 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR)—No. 2 Jon Rahm (2015, 2016), No. 7 Patrick Cantlay (2012) and No. 27 Rickie Fowler (2008). Other recipients include: Ricky Barnes (2003), Matt Every (2006), Doug Ghim (2018), Bill Haas (2004), Viktor Hovland (2019), Chris Kirk (2007), Hunter Mahan (2003), Maverick McNealy (2017), Ryan Moore (2005), Patrick Rodgers (2014), Kyle Stanley (2009), Nick Taylor (2010), D.J. Trahan (2002), Peter Uihlein (2011) and Chris Williams (2013).

Ten former winners are in the field at this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial with Fowler, Ghim, Haas, Hovland, Kirk, McNealy, Moore, Rahm, Rodgers and Uihlein. Additionally, award finalists in the tournament include: Bud Cauley, Wyndham Clark, Beau Hossler, Collin Morikawa, C.T. Pan, Jordan Spieth, Kevin Tway and Matthew Wolff.
