Southern California Section Launches ClubsForeYouth Program

(September 25, 2017) — PGA Magazine — The Southern California PGA Section and its Foundation created ClubsForeYouth as a means to provide student athletes, specifically female youth, with adequate resources needed to experience golf opportunities at the high school level. In particular, they strive to provide full sets of golf clubs to those in need.

In July, the first sets were handed out at East Covina’s Charter Oak High School. The SCPGA Foundation teamed with LA84 Foundation (a nonprofit created by the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee in support of youth sports programming and public education), as well as the Friends of Golf Foundation (aimed at supporting scholastic golfers with the resources needed for success), to provide the clubs.

Contributions from the LA84 Foundation, Friends of Golf, and others afforded the Section the opportunity to purchase an initial order of 100 sets, the first of which were given to nine smiling Charter Oak golfers. Within the coming months, students at Ramona High School in Riverside and Corona High School would also receive full sets.

“I think it’s great they’re allowing us this opportunity to play the game we love,” says Arianna Parham, a junior at Charter Oaks. “I just want to thank the PGA for giving us this opportunity to play golf with the people we enjoy playing it with.”

The program impacts lady high school golfers in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino and Riverside through the distribution of 100 sets of women’s clubs. According to recent studies, 70 percent of high school girls are competing with secondhand, borderline-serviceable equipment for practice and competition. An additional 44 percent of girls are borrowing or sharing equipment.

“Our job as the Southern California PGA is to bring happiness to people through the game of golf,” says PGA Professional Tom Addis III, the Section’s Executive Director and CEO. “With the ClubsForeYouth program, as we distribute this golf equipment to girls and boys throughout Southern California we hope to see more and more smiles.”

Wilson Staff is the official equipment partner of the SCPGA ClubsForeYouth program.
